Amazons, Eclectus, and Kakariki: Three Overlooked Profiles

Popular articles focus on macaws and African greys. Three other groups deserve technical analysis.

  • The blue-fronted amazon is a medium-sized parrot with a strong temperament. Its powerful beak and territorial nature make it a bird not recommended for beginners, despite its remarkable vocal ability and bright green plumage.
  • The eclectus (Eclectus roratus) is distinguished by a unique chromatic sexual dimorphism among parrots: the male is green, the female is red and blue. This difference is so marked that the two sexes were long classified as distinct species.
  • The kakariki (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae), native to New Zealand, is a small parrot with green and red plumage. Very active, it moves both on the ground and in flight, an atypical behavior for a Psittacidae. Its need for horizontal space differentiates it from classic budgerigars.
